SERVING ON
THE HOME FRONT
ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF U.S. MILITARY SPOUSES
WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL SERVES,
THEIR SPOUSE SERVES AS WELL.
We all recognize the soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman serving our nation in the U.S. armed forces. But no one fights alone. It’s the spouses and partners serving on the home front who help make a career of military service possible.
These home front heroes can face significant challenges. For some active-duty spouses, it’s life on the economic edge – struggling to afford housing and food. Active-duty spouses also navigate frequent relocations, solo parenting, and their own careers. Veteran spouses may struggle to build a new life alongside their transitioning service members – some of whom come home with visible or hidden injuries.
HOW CAN WE BETTER ASSIST
U.S. MILITARY SPOUSES?
In conversations with our home front heroes, we explored what life is like for military spouses and their families, their hopes and challenges, and how each of us can do more for them.

“Most people need a two income-earning family to survive – to be in the middle class. And if it’s really hard for the military spouse to find employment, it’s very hard for that family to thrive.”
– Elisa Borah, Research Director, Veteran Spouse Network, University of Texas at Austin
Military families experience the challenges of military service as a unit – and we must meet the needs of every member.
